Polartec LLC, Lawrence, Mass. in partnership with Patagonia, Ventura, Calif., has supplied the U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) with new jackets designed for active warmth.
The new jackets feature Polartec Alpha, a new synthetic-insulation technology that creates a breathable “puffy” garment. Unlike down and existing synthetic insulations, Polartec Alpha provides active warmth that allows air exchange for breathability and comfort in more dynamic situations, according to the company.
The technology was developed to meet the specific performance requirements of the U.S. Military SOF. The development brief required a warm, wind-resistant, durable, quick-drying and breathable material.
The resulting product, designed by Patagonia, is the SOF Protective Combat Uniform Level 3A Jacket, a standard-issue piece that has been fielded to every Special Forces Operator in the service. The garment will replace two to three layers, reducing costs, saving weight in the field and improving combat effectiveness, according to the company.
