An Overview of the Nuts and Bolts of T-shirt Manufacture

Published: December 7, 2023

In this Shop Talk discussion from Impressions Expo Atlantic City, the Ink Kitchen’s Rick Roth gathered a panel of industry experts to discuss exactly what goes on behind the scenes at a garment manufacturing facility.

We all know T-shirts and sweatshirts vary dramatically in terms of quality and feel. But how many people truly understand the nuts and bolts of garment manufacture and what exactly it is that makes for the many different looks and feels out there?

As part of the conversation, the panel touches on everything from fabric types (including ring spun, open end, carded and combed) to fabric weights, weaves, stitching types, dyes, how best to determine garment quality, and the various tasks and costs that go into creating a blank garment.

Joining Rick for this fascinating and informative conversation were Milissa Gibson of Lane Seven Apparel, Cheron Coleman of AlphaBroder, and Alan Yankey of Gildan Activewear. Enjoy!
