Design Tip: How to Combine Textured Cutter Materials

Published: August 25, 2015

Textured vinyl materials, like glitter flake, cannot be layered when creating a multicolor or multi-material design. When using a textured cutter product, trapping can be used to create the same effect.

Trapping is a technique where two materials slightly overlap, allowing both pieces to have contact with the garment and form a good bond.

A trap of about 1mm usually allows for shrinkage without the edges peeling. If garment show-through between colors is a concern, an alternative is “gapping” to outline a color.

Other materials that are ideal for this technique include foil materials, such as hologram and metallic films.
